Specialize Units of  Wrongful Convicted

In 2016 a record-breaking total of 166 people were exonerated in that year alone with one case going as far back as 1964. In 2018, Illinois had a total of 49 people exonerated, with New York and Texas following with 16 exonerations each. As of December 2020, there were almost 3,000 exonerations since 1989, which equals to more than 24,600 years stolen by the criminal justice system. The question that many people ponder is, “Why are more falsely accused people being exonerated more than ever before?”

Many scholars suggested that implementing Conviction Integrity Units (CIU) or Convection Review Units (CRU) is a growing trend. The first unit was established in 2002. As of 2019, there are 44 CIU or CRU with 5 being in Florida. These special units are responsible for 225+ exonerations. CIU and CRU were created to give additional oversight to cases that warrant an extra review. Furthermore, these units help build trust and confidence in our judicial system. The unit panel is made up of members of the community. If the conviction was found to be wrongful then the State Attorney’s Office will remedy the conviction by dismissing the underlying charges. In addition to taking the appropriate measures to prevent similar wrongful convictions.
